So Irwin Hill starting kicker for Cowboys tonite.  Never even kicked for Hogs?

draftkings33

He was there a year when Hocker wasn't playing wasn't he?

Why didn't Sprinkle get more playing time from 2013 to 2015???

Sam Irwin Hill was here during the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Hocker was kicker in 2013 so..... Hill wasn't going to replace him.

In 2014 Hill actually kicked off 18 times but the duties primarily went to McFain.

Adam McFain     45     60.29 avg. yards   10 touchbacks
Sam Irwin-Hill     18     61.89 avg. yards   6   touchbacks

Irwin-Hill had a higher touchback % but he was primarily used as our punter in 2014.  He was never used for place kicking (field goals or extra points).  McFain was the primary place kicker and went 20/20 for extra points and 7/10 on field goals.

Do you mean SIH? If so, you're correct.

Hogdomer

The kicking game directly lost us two games in 2014.  Texas A&M and Alabama.  That's not debateable.  Irwin-Hill would have been a huge improvement in field goals, extra points and kickoffs.  That's not debateable either.

Either one would have been fine. Both were better options than Henson.

I'm pulling for Sam to get an NFL gig, but he did not "start" for Dallas tonight - not in the sense that he's running first team.

He is, essentially, a "camp leg" to keep the Dallas starters (Jones, the punter; and Bailey, the placement specialist) from having to kick so much during camp.  Both of those guys are among the top 5 in the league in their respective specialties, and in NO danger of losing their job to Sam or anyone else.

This does give Sam a chance to showcase his skills in case someone else is looking to improve their kicking situation, so I'm glad he's getting this opportunity.  But to say that he's "Starting" for Dallas is misleading and incorrect.

Is this really happening??  The kicker position is probably the easiest position to evaluate, which ever kicker is kicking FGs at a higher % in practice, is likely going to start unless he has a huge problem with the nerves of kicking in front 70,000 fans.  My point is that if SIH was the better kicker during his time here, he would have been the guy.

We lost to Bama 14-13 and missed a chip shot field goal and an extra point.  We missed a chip shot field goal in the fourth quarter against A&M that would have sealed the game.  Irwin-Hill has proven at the professional level, with narrower goalposts, that he is a better kicker than whoever we tried in 2014.

Whether true or not, to go into a "someone should have been fired" rant for something that happened back three or four years ago is totally ludicrous. How about we go ahead and argue whether or not whether or not Broyles should have been fired after a 5-5 season in 1963? Makes about as much sense. Some folks will b%tch about anything!!

1. The extra point against Bama was blocked.  We didn't miss a field goal against Bama.  Alabama's kicker (Adam Griffith) missed a 30 yard field goal in the 2nd quarter.

2. Chipshot does not = 44 yard field goal.  We missed a 44 yard field goal against AnM in the 4th quarter.

3. Both goalposts in the NFL and NCAA are both 18 feet - 6 inches wide.

They spend a 2nd round pick on a kicker just last year and after 1 season and a summer, cut him.

On paper, the FSU kicker was as sure a bet as there could be. No idea why he's been bad at the NFL.

Nick Folk is a good veteran kicker who's been with the team this off-season so Hocker is likely just a camp leg. That said, it's not like they are married to Folk as a kicker so if Hocker impresses, he has a chance.

Well at the time, he was obviously the best kicker on his college team and played really well and was arguably the best kicker in the nation.  Players can get better or they can get worse based on their work effort.  SIH has obviously gotten better, but at the time, he was not the best kicker on our team.

Also, I never said it was easy, but said that it was the easiest position to evaluate.  So are you arguing my point by saying that the kicker is not the easiest position to evaluate or are you just arguing to argue?

In a thread about a player that is probably just kicking in the pre season to keep the actual kickers from having to kick does it really matter why anyone i saying anything?

He's played enough to be recognized by NFL GM's. Teams ditch kickers so often, he'll get plenty of opportunities. I think he's good enough to find a full time gig at some point.
