Arkansas has maybe the best QB in the SEC in Allan.   Other than him, the reason I'm predicting 9 wins is the offensive line.   They are going to be vastly improved.   Allan will have more time in the pocket and get hit less.  The running backs will have lanes to run in.  The entire season hinges on an improved OL, and they will be.

5th year SR QB and Rhoads as DC. Its time.........

The NewEra

1)  Fifth year in development under Bielema
2)  Year 3 with Enos as OC
3)  Year 2 with Rhodes on the D-side of the ball, his move to OC and the new hires
4)  A vastly improved O-Line, especially in the pass pro game
5)  Austin Allen
6)  The best tight end group in the country
7)  A very solid group of talent at running back
8)  Speed and size at receiver corps.
9)  The 3-4 which the team has bought into allows these guys to PLAY BALL in the front and utilize our speed and athleticism at Line Backer.
10)  A talented, seasoned group in the secondary.
11)  A renewed emphasis of physicality on both sides of the ball.
12)  A mature group of Razorbacks across the entire team that have been incident free and are excelling in the classroom.
13)  A determination that I haven't seen from this team in years, it's obvious but in no way arrogant or assuming.

I've been thinking 8-wins, but I'm going to up that to 9-wins and maybe more if we get the type of breaks any team needs to make a serious run.

Yeah, Allen* is probably the best QB in the SEC. Yeah the OL should be improved, and Whaley and the RB's should be fine. What about our practically brand new receiving core? A lot of inexperience there outside of Cornelius. I would say our entire season hinges more so on the new 3-4 defense. I think 8 wins would be a heck of a season given all of the changes and setback with Williams.

razorbackfan4life

OL is the most important factor in our success this year.  We have to run the ball at will in the second half of games.

pigroots

This...we will always live and die by oline and last year we couldn't run it when it was 3rd and 2 so we couldn't control clock and it cost us 2-3 games. Allen has got to stay healthy or we are toast

If the OL is strong (and not just in the 1st half) and the defense improves to top-40ish, we will win the games we are supposed to win.

We have to keep scoring in the second half of games and we have to create turnovers or negative plays when they get desperate and start taking bigger risks on offense. We cannot kick field goals and mount long, fruitless drives with a "bend but don't break" defense to close out games. Offenses can score too fast to sit on a 10pt lead and melt the clock and ask your defense to keep the ball in front of them.

In todays football, if you are going to run pro style, your fourth quarter must feature:
-melting the clock
-then scoring
-then getting some big plays on defense

I wish I would have remembered to put the great leadership you mentioned on my list.  That's a biggie for this team from what I'm reading.

i'm expecting 7 wins.  I think we would win more if we find a way to protect Allen and if the run defense can be more effective.

Agree with everything mentioned especially regarding the Oline. I'm adding that we will be pleasantly surprised by the 3-4 defense. We will have more athletes and speed on the defensive side of the ball which should help the run defense. Offense has not been a problem under CBB and I am looking forward to this revamped defense that will give the majority of the spread offenses we play havoc.

9-4

Easy schedule
Very good experienced qb, experienced O line
Defense with something to prove with with an all sec player on each level

Austin Allen in his 2nd year starting. Should see a significant increase in performance from him.

returning OL: We return 4/5 starters which is always a good thing. Last year, we had 3 brand new starters and still had the best qb in the SEC and the leading regular season rusher. The mistakes were the worst early in the season and become less common later. The players were rarely beaten physically, and much of the pressure allowed was from mental errors which are the most likely to be corrected b/w the first and second year starting. For example, Froholdt being on the watch list for the Outland Trophy for best interior linemen is evidence that plenty of others saw him do physically well and expect his mental mistakes to be cleaned up.

Our WR group: 6 4* players. Cornelius statistically was the best performing receiver in the country last year from the slot position. Martin and Nance (while Martin has received criticism as of late, he was a starter for us as of early fall and should still be a significant contributor) have done well. Stewart and Pettway have stepped up. Jones is burning people left and right. Warren and Barnes have already been talked about as not redshirting and Jackson might not be able to be redshirted either.

Our TE's: Look at Cantrell's speed on his big catch in the MSU game. He was beating angles as a 270 pound monster. O'Grady really came on at the end of last year and Patton has been getting good praise as well. If those three weren't enough, Gunter will very likely end up being the best of the group by the time their careers are over here.

Our RB's: Whaley rushed for over 600 yards last year with over 5 ypc as a true freshmen. We knew he had speed coming out of HS, but he showed unexpected strength and leg drive as well. Maleek came in during the spring and picked up things like pass blocking and such really well and is probably our strongest tailback. David Williams transferred in and worst case is a Wingo which is still a great addition and so far, he could be much more. That is enough for a very good SEC RB position group. However, now we have to add in Chase Hayden to the mix who I expected was a strong redshirt candidate but has been demonstrating that he too might be too good to keep off the field. And that isn't even mentioning the glimpses we've seen from Hammonds who will be doing his best Percy Harvin impression this season as a rb/wr dual threat.

Our DE's: Sosa played well in his limited time as a true freshmen, showing why he was a 5* player and will look to build quite a bit on that during his sophomore campaign. Along with Agim, TJ Smith is an explosive guy who would have been stuck as a tweener de/dt in the 4-3 but is an ideal 3-4 DE. Guidry is quick first step guy who would have been fine in the 4-3, but is a massive 3-4 DE who can eat up two blocks or get penetration. Behind them, Porter and Taylor are two young ones who are a bit small at the moment, but have great speed and quickness (could probably play OLB if they wanted to).

Our DT's: Bijhon had one of the quickest first steps from a big guy I've ever seen coming out of HS. I liked him as a prospect more than Frazier. He has shown that in his play as well, nearly living in the backfield on the limited reps. Conditioning has been a factor for him, similar to Hodge who had the role before, but Hodge got into shape his senior year and reports from our coaches have been similar for Jackson this year. Behind him, Capps as a true freshmen was already in the top 5 strongest players on our team. Now he is coming into his sophomore year after significant playing time as a true freshmen and should have an even bigger impact. Marshall and Watts provide added depth with minimal drop off.

ILB: Greenlaw has been a consistent tackler and one of our better LB'ers in pass coverage the past few years, and we are getting him back from injury. DeJon Harris played quite a bit last year as a true freshmen as well. Coming out of HS, he had the best tape of any LB we've signed in a long time, had the recruiting offers from big time schools to match, and was rated in the low 80's by PFF against teams like Bama, LSU, and VT. For comparison, Ragnow was rated in the mid-80's and was the best rated center in the country. Scoota will likely be the best LB we've had in a long time. Eugene has split time this year at the outside pass coverage LB spot and inside, so I'll talk about him here. In the 6 games he started last year, he was equally as productive as Greenlaw giving our defense a boost at the LB position. For added depth, LaFrance, Morgan, and Henry have all performed very well this fall.

OLB: Ramsey was a pass rushing specialist when he came here and in limited playing time last year, made the opposing qb's feel his presence. Undersized as a 3-4 OLB, he should still be a pass rushing force. Gabe Richardson and Kyrie Fisher both came from 3-4 defenses in CC and HS respectively and are good fits for OLB showing skills  in pass coverage as well as pass rushing. Roesler is a senior now that has moved around a bit, but has been a jack of all providing good depth and has been listed at times this offseason as a starter. Josh Paul, like Ramsey, is undersized and may redshirt this season as a true freshmen, but he has impeccable speed and explosion.

CB: Easily our most impressive group on defense. Led by Henre Toliver and Ryan Pulley (both upperclassmen), this should be the class of our defense. Toliver was one of our leading playmakers in the 2014 defense in terms of impact plays (TFL, int, fumbles, etc...) which given the likes of Philon, Spaight, and Flowers, is quite impressive. He also shut down some of the opposing team's top WR's including Amari Cooper who NFL corner's have difficulty with. Pulley led our team with 13 pbu's last season and really jumped onto the scene for us last year as a cover corner and looks to really become a lockdown guy this season. The position also includes senior captian Kevin Richardson III who has been a swiss army knife for us and it hurt our secondary not having him last year. For depth, we have the likes of the speedy JUCO who was injured last year in Tutt, and very talented freshmen already in the rotation this year with the likes of Calloway and Curtis. Curl is currently with the CB's but I still think he will end up at safety for us. Dalton is another long DB for us who has played both corner and safety so I don't know where he is right now. However, at 6'3, he has a lot of length and in HS, showed very good skills catching interceptions and knocking balls away.

S: Coley and rare junior captain Ramirez lead the group. Coley is our hard hitter who just needs to not get ejected from games. Ramirez is a very athletic player who put his whole being into this team during the offseason it seems and should really make a jump for us this year. Liddell has also started a fair amount for us and has good athleticism, also being in the rotation as a nickelback. Behind them, Reid Miller and Micah Smith make up some talented younger guys who could easily start, though they might get surpassed by the likes of Brown and Curl. Brown had some academic issues and his late start this year might keep him from playing this season and Curl is currently with the CB's, but I think both could very well be starting for us perhaps next season if Ramirez unexpectedly leaves.

If Arkansas can win 8 games, Bret deserves alot of the credit. You still dont have a game breaker in the back field and the receivers are inexperienced. The defense will have to create turnovers to get to 8 wins.

Offense will be better than last year. The team last year without any improvement was good enough to win 8 games.

The nine real teams we've scheduled refuse to play the Hogs out of fear of catching a new variant of the swine flew, resulting in nine forfeitures and the Hogs defaulting into the CFP.  They did not realize that by its other name, the "second half collapse", this new swine flew was easily curable with a new DC.

I agree with you on having and improved O-Line and giving Allen the extra protection being a great help for him and it helping in cutting down on the int's he threw last year as well.  It also should help our RB's with the lanes they will have to run thru, Whaley hits the hole a lot faster than Williams did even though I think we will miss RWILL some.

But to me our season hinges more on our defense and how well they play.  I think if our LB Corp plays better and we get a lot better with our safety and DB's, we'll have a chance to have a very good season, and I'm talking 9 wins in the regular season here.  But this all hinges on a vastly improved Defense.

I'll trust Steef on this one, not because I think he knows anything, but because I am certain you don't.  So I look for SC to perform terribly offensively under muschamp in the second year. And look for Ed O to do the same thing to LSU that he did to ole miss

always so antagonistic.  Rumor has it they lost several O-linemen. So could be its already started. Time will tell wont it.
But hey, if Di'nardo can do it at LSU I am sure Ed O can.

This team should have won games games including bowl last season. I'd say just a tiny improvement to the offense should get the team to an 8 win regular season and the improvement to the offense we are expecting makes 9 wins in the regular season quite realistic ignoring any improvement to the defense.

A slight improvement to the defense and the improvement you'd expect from any team returning starters/significant contributors including our opponents and we absolutely should win 9 games in the regular season.

1. I think the defense will be 10-15% better, maybe more.
2. I think Allen will improve on INTs.
3. I think our RBs will be equal to or better than last year.
4. I think our receivers will do fine.
5. I think Agim, Bihjon and DLine will be less reactive.
6. I hope we'll kick a little better.
I expect to win the games we ought to win and be competitive in as many other games as possible. - M Barton

Going back and watching a few games from last year what really stands out is how completely horrible we were running the ball on standard rushing downs against good defenses. We were *not* powerful in the trenches.

If we can get more yards out of the running game on 1st and 2nd down and do better on 3rd and short and goal-to-go situations, that alone could turn our 2nd half offensive from a liability to a major strength.

Our return game was terrible last year. Especially the kick returns. If we can improve on the OL and defense and get some field position from our returns we cant help but be better this year. Special teams are a major phase and besides our punt team we were bad last year.

I agree completely. A solid, consistent, offensive line has the ability to positively effect every other aspect of the team. It would obviously help the rest of the offense, but a consistent offense would be a huge benefit to our defense and specials as well. 8 wins is a good season this year, 9 wins is a great season. I think Bama and LSU on the road are likely losses. I'm pretty concerned about Auburn at home. If we lost those 3 and beat the rest of our schedule, I would be ecstatic.

Wooooooooo pig!

This, plus play four quarters instead of two or three.
