ESPN obtained a letter that was sent from attorney Thomas Mars to Ole Miss assistant general counsel Rob Jolly on Friday. In the letter, Mars states that the university is estimating the cost of searching, reviewing, redacting and duplicating Freeze’s cell phone records from June 2012 to now at $25,100. And that doesn’t include the cost of what it would be to do the same for Freeze’s landline calls.

Ole Miss estimated that it would take 190 hours for the records to be prepared by somebody from its outside attorney’s office and somebody from its general counsel’s office.

According to ESPN, in Mars’ letter, he accuses the school of a “pattern of concealing information from the public by manufacturing bogus exemptions and illegal roadblocks that plainly violate the FOIA.”

One student said that Freeze made her change out of her Grateful Dead T-shirt in his office instead of doing so in a bathroom. The student said that Freeze did nothing sexual but was still off-put by his behavior.

Freeze did issue a response to USA Today regarding the accusations.

“These accusations are totally false. I can unequivocally say that during my time at Briarcrest Christian School I handled disciplinary issues professionally and in accordance with the school’s policy. I am very confident that the members of the administration who worked hand in hand with me during my tenure will verify that,” Freeze said.

The man Freeze replaced at Ole Miss, Houston Nutt, is suing the school after he claims that the school, led by Freeze, attempted to smear his name with regard to the NCAA investigation.

Archie Manning finally chooses to speak  on Hugh Freeze controversy, Matt Luke’s challenge

https://twitter.com/ChrisHudgison/status/892174634917007362

Quote
Considered Freeze a “friend” and that he was “sorry” about what happened at Ole Miss.

“I think he’s so well respected by the players, they’re going to play hard for him and the coaches will coach hard for him,” Manning said of Luke. “Matt is going to do a great job for us.”

“He’s been around coaching now for 20 years. He knows you’ve got to go out and play in week one. That’s about all you can do. Then, you tee it up and play in week two. I think that’s the way Matt will approach it.”

Hugh Freeze will be allowed to redact phone records before public release

Quote
niversity’s general counsel said Thursday that Freeze can review and redact phone records covering his time as coach of the Rebels, according to Josh Peter of USA TODAY.

Freeze resigned July 20 after a report of a call to a female escort service was discovered following a lawsuit filed by former coach Houston Nutt.

The university then reviewed the records and athletics director Ross Bjork said a “concerning pattern” was discovered. USA TODAY Sports then requested the records, resulting to the revelation [sic] from the university about Freeze’s ability to redact the records before they go public.

Ole Miss issued a letter to the publication stating that Freeze was issued the phone by the Ole Miss Athletics Foundation and that allowed him to make public and personal calls with it. Since the resignation is a personnel matter — and the foundation is a private, non-profit organization — Freeze has the right to redact the records before they are issued to the public.

USA TODAY also reported Ole Miss said it would pay for the cost to review all of Freeze’s records to redact students’ numbers, which the school said it must do to comply with federal privacy laws. Ole Miss estimated it would cost $20,000.

Hugh Freeze releases statement: 'My hope is to be a head coach again as soon as possible'

In this Tuesday, July 18, 2017 photo, then-Ole Miss football coach Hugh Freeze considers a response to a question as he speaks to reporters during a Rebel Road Trip to visit with alumni and athletic supporters in Jackson, Miss. Mississippi announced Thursday, July 20, that Freeze resigned

Quote
Hours after the NCAA handed down to Ole Miss the final penalties in an investigation in the football program, the fired coach in the middle of it all, Hugh Freeze released a statement.

This morning, the committee on infractions provided finality to a long process of investigating my program, my coaching staff, and my own actions. While I am disappointed that the COI found that I violated the NCAA's head coach responsibilities bylaw in any way, I am relieved to have a final decision. In order to move forward with my career, I accept the single restriction imposed by the COI and will not appeal the decision.

The COI expressly agreed that I "promoted an atmosphere of compliance and expected my staff to abide by the rules." They describe my compliance efforts as "admirable" and acknowledged "the many initiatives I took in an attempt to ensure rules compliance among my staff." I am very pleased that the CIO listened to what I had to say and affirmed my efforts at promoting rules compliance.

While I appreciate the COI's recognition of my compliance efforts, I am disappointed that the CIO found that, in some instances, I failed to monitor my staff appropriately. I believe I made every effort to do so. Yet, I am encouraged that the CIO found the failure to monitor was a mitigated violation based on, among other things, my personal record of compliance with NCAA rules.

Specifically, the COI imposed a head coach restriction that would require me to serve two conference-game suspension if I am hired as a head coach for the 2018 football season. This restriction ends on November 30 2018, and would not affect my ability as a head coach to recruit prospective student-athletes; to participate in preseason coaching activities, including spring or fall practice; or to coach any non-conference games. While my hope is to be a head coach again as soon as possible, this restriction does not limit, in any way, my ability to serve as an assistant coach.

I want to thank everyone who stood by me, including my family, my friends, and the University of Mississippi. I look forward to returning to the job that I love, working with student-athletes once again, and applying the valuable lessons that are learned during this long process.

NCAA gave Ole Miss an additional postseason ban for 2018, stripped the school of two additional scholarships, put it on probation until Nov. 30, 2020 and forced the vacation of wins.

Ole Miss had self-imposed a bowl ban for 2017, along with a reduction of 11 scholarships over a total of four years, prior to the news.

Among the penalties, Freeze was given a two-game conference suspension should he be hired before Nov. 30, 2018.
