Could Jason Smith play quarterback for Auburn?
http://bit.ly/1PWPVQl

Quote
Jason Smith came to Auburn as a quarterback willing to move to wide receiver and the junior college transfer is open to reversing course if called upon to go behind center.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Smith said he most recently took reps at quarterback during the week of practice leading up to the Iron Bowl.

"I think I can (still play quarterback)," Smith said. "But I got faith in the quarterbacks that we have to get us the ball. We can still win regardless."

Asked if he'd be open to switch back to quarterback, where he played at McGill-Toolen High School and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Smith answered affirmatively.

Jeremy Johnson struggled during the first three games, after which he was benched for throwing six interceptions. Sean White started the next five games with mixed results, throwing for 1,064 yards with just one touchdown and two interceptions before suffering a left knee injury.

"We have faith in (Johnson) ... in Sean White too," Smith said. "It's no letdown (with) either quarterback getting in the game. We feel like we can win the game with either one of them."

Auburn (6-6, 2-6 SEC) is projected to return Johnson, White and Tyler Queen, who is redshirting after having season-ending Tommy John surgery, next season but the coaching staff has been non-committal as to whether any of them will be the starter next season.

Auburn also has a commitment from three-star dual-threat quarterback John Franklin III out of East Mississippi Community College...

Quarterback Woody Barrett eager to show Auburn he can compete as a freshman http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2015/12/quarterback_woody_barrett_aubu.html … @WoodyB_1

Quote
Despite Auburn's crowded competition at quarterback heading into next season, Ervin "Woody" Barrett believes he has the ability to shake things up as a freshman.

Assuming both Jeremy Johnson and Sean White return in 2016, Barrett will also be up against John Franklin III, a JUCO transfer from East Mississippi Community College, and Tyler Queen, who was redshirted in 2015.

"There are a lot of people looking forward to me stepping up and being the guy," Barrett said following his unofficial visit to Auburn for the Iron Bowl. "So I just humble myself and come in and do what I can... We run a similar offense back at West Orange so there's nothing new. It's just the signals. So once I get that down pat, I can be come and be the dual-threat and be me."

The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder from Orlando committed to Auburn over Alabama in June, and has remained solid with the Tigers. He is ranked as the nation's No. 4 dual-threat quarterback...

Auburn went from 43 ppg @ home in 2014 to 24.6 ppg (100th in FBS) @ Jordan-Hare this season
http://bit.ly/1XzyI3E

Quote
During the last 13 months, Auburn saw its 2014 season derailed by a stunning 41-38 loss to Texas A&M and struggled offensively in home losses to Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Georgia and Alabama this season. Even in wins over Jacksonville State, San Jose State and Idaho at Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn had issues.

Auburn's offensive production at home has fallen off a cliff.

Tigers averaged 38.4 points in eight home games in 2013, rose to 43 points in seven games during 2014, but dropped to 24.6 points this season - ranked 100th nationally and 10th in the SEC.

Playing at home is supposed to be advantageous, but not to Auburn's quarterbacks.

A change in the calendar will offer Malzahn an opportunity to right the ship when he enters his fourth season leading the Tigers.

With the exception of the upcoming bowl game [in Birmingham], Auburn is in the midst of an eight-game regular season home stand, the longest ever for the program.

Auburn opens the 2016 season with five straight home games against Clemson, Arkansas State, Texas A&M, LSU and Louisiana-Monroe. The Tigers' next regular season road trip is to Starkville, Mississippi on Oct. 8, 2016.

Will Jeremy Johnson be at #Auburn in 2016? http://ow.ly/VK026

Quote
Jeremy Johnson was noncommittal regarding his future beyond the Auburn's bowl game immediately following the Iron Bowl, but the quarterback has given an indication of his plans for next season to the coaching staff.

The Montgomery native had "no comment" about his future following Auburn's loss in the Iron Bowl, but Johnson has led Auburn coach Gus Malzahn to believe he will return in 2016.

"Yeah we've talked to our players; we're talked to every one of them," Malzahn said. 'We expect Jeremy to be back, put it that way."

A senior-to-be, Johnson will face stiff competition for playing time next season. Auburn also returns Sean White and Tyler Queen and has commitments from dual-threat JUCO quarterback John Franklin III and Woody Barrett.

Sean White’s status hopeful for Birmingham Bowl http://www.oanow.com/sports/college/auburn/football/sean-white-s-status-hopeful-for-birmingham-bowl/article_f50a626e-9f9e-11e5-bd84-e7d05bf959c2.html

White has been dealing with a knee injury since late in the fourth quarter of Auburn’s quadruple-overtime loss to Arkansas on Oct. 24 in Fayetteville, Ark.

Malzahn said the team will reconvene Monday to begin bowl preparation for Memphis, and he is hoping White will be healthy enough to practice then.

Of course, White isn’t the only Auburn player who was slowed by injuries late in the season. Center Austin Golson was also dealing with a knee injury down the homestretch, missing the final two games of the regular season, and Malzahn said he is “kind of in that same boat” as White.

“We’re hoping that he’s going to be healthy enough to really practice and all that, but he’s a guy that’s kind of in that same boat. We’ve had some extended time off and we hope that really helps.”

How is Auburn quarterback Sean White performing in bowl practice?
http://bit.ly/1lXPARa

Quote
Sean White is taking part in Auburn's practices for the Birmingham Bowl.

"He looked good," senior wide receiver Jonathan Wallace said Tuesday. "I'm just proud to see him continue to push through. He's doing some real good things out there."

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn cancelled his scheduled Friday press conference without explanation and White has not been available for interviews since Oct. 31.

Auburn (6-6, 2-6 SEC) still lists White as its starting quarterback despite Jeremy Johnson starting the final four games of the regular season.

The Tigers rank 11th in the SEC and 107th nationally in passing offense (175.5 ypg.)...

3 reasons why Sean White should start at QB in Birmingham Bowl http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2015/12/3_reasons_why_sean_white_should_start_birmingham_bowl.html

Quote
Gus Malzahn hasn't announced a starting quarterback for the Birmingham Bowl. [Nor will he.]

Injuries to Sean White's left knee and a foot (against Arkansas) have left questions about his availability against Memphis unanswered.

Three reasons why White (if healthy) should start ahead of Jeremy Johnson in the Birmingham Bowl:

1. He was improving before the injury

2. He was averaging 255 yards at a crucial stretch

3. He could still be the future of Auburn football

Some will argue Johnson's time has come and gone. His performance at Texas A&M was admirable and led the Tigers to a 26-10 victory, but White has been the more consistent and electric of the two. The injury bug has kept White on the sideline, but if he can continue to improve as a starter -- and have an explosive performance against Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl --

#Auburn's QB competition is 'wide open,' and two newcomers will have a chance to earn the job: http://ow.ly/Y0mMj

Quote
Auburn's quarterbacks will start with a blank slate when spring practices begin March 1.

In fact, it doesn't appear previous performances will matter at all when Jeremy Johnson, Sean White, Tyler Queen and newcomer John Franklin III step on the field.

"Our quarterback position is wide open," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said.

Auburn struggled throughout the 2015 season at quarterback, where Jeremy Johnson lost his job and regained it when Sean White injured a foot and knee. Neither quarterback had a stellar season, combining for 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while rushing for a combined 172 yards, leaving coaches to land two dual-threat quarterbacks in the signing class Wednesday.

The competition could extend into preseason camp in August, too, Malzahn said, but he'd rather not have four players splitting reps in a wide-open battle at that time...

Auburn's QB competition appears to be wide open heading into day one of spring practice: http://ow.ly/YWLXw

R-Sean White

Quote
Auburn's starting quarterback job appears to be wide open.

The Tigers open spring practice Tuesday with no clear front-runner to win the job, and head coach Gus Malzahn said each one will begin with equal reps.

"We'll chart everything that they do in team settings, 7-on-7 settings and give them all a chance to compete," Malzahn said. "Competition brings out the best in everyone. My experience is, the longer spring goes on, you put the guys in different situations... So we'll see and me and (offensive coordinator) Rhett (Lashlee) will evaluate that position on a daily basis."

Jeremy Johnson and Sean White started seven and six games, respectively, for Auburn in 2015 with mixed results. At midseason, the Tigers offered a scholarship to junior college quarterback John Franklin III, who committed and enrolled in January.

Though his accuracy has been questioned, Franklin (6-1, 174) brings an attribute that's been missing from Auburn's offense since Nick Marshall left in 2014 -- speed. In a two-quarterback system at East Mississippi Community College last fall, Franklin rushed for 451 yards and nine touchdowns. Johnson and White combined for 172 net rushing yards in 2015.

Franklin told AL.com last fall he intends to win the job prior to before fall camp begins. Malzahn said Franklin is already off to a good start with his strength and conditioning under coach Ryan Russell.

Meanwhile, fellow quarterback Tyler Queen has not fully recovered from his shoulder surgery, but is expected to participate in spring practice on a limited basis. Tigers also singed dual-threat quarterback Woody Barrett in the 2016 recruiting cycle, but the four-star prospect will not enroll until after spring. Former Vigor quarterback Devin Adams will walk on for the Tigers.

John Franklin III has the "wow factor," says Gus Malzahn, but what about Jeremy Johnson and Sean White? http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2016/03/john_franklin_iiis_wow_factor.html

Quote
The missing component in Auburn's zone-read offense last season was that "wow factor." The Tigers' quarterbacks -- Jeremy Johnson and Sean White -- were also inaccurate at times, leading to a constant flip-flop in the rotation near the end of the season due to injuries and other factors in practice.

The question is whether Johnson or White can make those "wow" plays Malzahn craves.

"I think both of those guys, at times, they made wow plays," Malzahn said. "They're veteran guys and they can make plays even when the system breaks down and I've seen it a few times already. Just their approach. I would say they're much improved than where they were last year, but of course that's normal for guys that have experience for a year and then they have an offseason and then they come back."

Franklin III was the backup QB at East Mississippi Community College last season.

It's almost separation time for the #Auburn quarterbacks: http://ow.ly/ZSeQy

Quote
Auburn is expected to conduct its first scrimmage of the spring Saturday, and with it could come the first tackle-the-quarterback portion on the Plains since August 2013. In a season defined by struggles at quarterback after Jeremy Johnson and Sean White looked like world beaters in practice, the realization is that pressure must be placed on them and newcomer John Franklin III to properly gauge what will happen on game days.

Coach Gus Malzahn hasn't decided yet if he will make his quarterbacks "live" in scrimmages, but he has been leaning that way all spring.

"I like being upfront and telling them at least the night before just to get their minds prepared and all that," Malzahn said. "That's usually what we've done in the past when we've done that."

The last time Auburn went "live" with its quarterbacks and removed the orange non-contact jerseys, Nick Marshall emerged from the pack as the Tigers' starting quarterback.

Could the same thing happen with one of Auburn's top contenders this spring? Malzahn said earlier Franklin III, who many have compared to Marshall, has already displayed a "wow factor" in practices. Teammates have been equally impressed with his speed, elusiveness and understanding of the zone-read attack. Johnson and White are mobile, but not as fast and elusive as the former Florida State and East Mississippi Community College backup quarterback.

I'm not sure he signed one at all.

The "Wow kid" is probably a dback Gussie is trying to fit in at QB so he'll have some sort of running threat at QB.

Personally, I REALLY hope this kid plays against us because Gus will never beat us without a serious threat throwing the football.

The skinny on new Auburn QB Franklin: He better beef up before season http://sec.news/22zUO8X

Quote
Due to his speed, the natural comparison for Auburn junior college transfer quarterback John Franklin III has been former Tigers quarterback Nick Marshall. But as Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee pointed out Thursday, Franklin still has serious ground to make up from a physical standpoint.

Marshall played at around 200 pounds in his first year as the starter. Franklin is listed on Auburn’s official roster at a mere 174.

“I think in our league it does (matter),” Lashlee said about the weight disparity, according to The Ledger-Enquirer’s Michael Niziolek. “He (Marshall) came back in his senior year and was up to about 210 and that 10-12 pounds made a huge difference. He played the whole year and never missed a game and stayed healthy.”

On the field, Franklin entered this spring’s quarterback battle as the least experienced among his two competitors, senior Jeremy Johnson and sophomore Sean White. Johnson and White both saw time as the starter last season...

Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn says today was a 100-play scrimmage and John Franklin III got a lot of work "and that was by design".

Malzahn said quarterbacks were live for contact today Franklin III "is still learning the offense" and he fumbled the ball once today but "that was expected".

Malzahn says "we learned a lot" about his quarterback position. "We'll learn more from this scrimmage than the other seven practices".

Robinson on QBs. Johnson consistent, Franklin III 70-something run that "surprised" people. White threw 75-yard pass to Roc Thomas.

they are so screwed. They are gambling on EMCC backup QB who runs a 4.55 @ 170lbs and is inaccurate as hell! OMG, this is going to be a super fun season for watching As The Barn Burns!

From yesterday: Auburn's QBs went live in the team's first scrimmage -- but separation remains to be seen http://www.oanow.com/sports/college/auburn/football/auburn-s-qbs-go-live-but-separation-in-position-race/article_14913ae4-f3b0-11e5-aff6-8bac3e85cde9.html

John Franklin III “surprised” everybody. Jeremy Johnson went deep. Sean White looked comfortable.

All three of Auburn’s quarterbacks went live for the first time this spring as the team held a 100-play scrimmage on Saturday — and the day could soon prove to be a watershed moment in the team’s offseason quarterback race.

“It was good for our quarterbacks,” Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn said. “It's very good to evaluate those guys in a live situation…. We got some good information moving forward.”

All three players rotated with the first- and second-team units on offense during the scrimmage on Saturday morning, which was split between Jordan-Hare Stadium and the team’s indoor practice facility. Malzahn said the aim was to get each member of the trio equal reps against a live defense, though Franklin — the newest member of the group — got “quite a bit of work” by design since the coaching staff has less information on him than on Johnson and White, who split time at the position last season.

Franklin apparently made the most of his first live action against Auburn’s defense. Although he did fumble the ball on a backfield exchange, according to Malzahn, he also wowed with his legs, breaking off a run of about 70 yards before being chased down by safety Rudy Ford to save a touchdown.

“It kind of surprised me, probably surprised everybody in the stadium,” running back Jovon Robinson said.

Franklin had an opportunity to run the zone-read part of Auburn’s offense, though he was also given a chance to throw the ball at times on Saturday. While Malzahn said Franklin overthrew a couple of deep passes downfield, the Tigers’ fourth-year head coach added that the JUCO transfer was able to extend plays with his legs as well.

“He's still learning the offense,” Malzahn said. “He is eager to learn everything inside and out, but it's a process. We throw a lot at our quarterbacks, and he's trying his best to take everything in. I think he's responding well.”

Though Franklin’s long run impressed those in attendance, Johnson may have had the play of the day. The rising senior and Montgomery native completed a touchdown pass of about 75 yards to running back Roc Thomas on a wheel route out of the backfield.

The play was one of the highlights of a scrimmage that saw the offense score a few times but was generally even with the defense.

Overall, though, Malzahn said both Johnson and White looked “very comfortable” running the offense on Saturday, while Robinson remarked about White’s accuracy on the day.

I noticed not a word on Franklin's passing.  I wonder why that is?

How is it that in our system, known as a run first system, we have a logjam of QB's and Gus, who is considered a HUNH QB guru, has to get the back up from a community college and convert DB's?  It's unreal.  He recruits well everywhere else, why is QB his Achilles heel?

SEC spring position battles: Auburn Tigers http://es.pn/1q2Pfi7

Quote
The last time Auburn knew who its quarterback was going to be before spring practice was 2007, when two-year starter Brandon Cox returned for his senior year. This year is unique, though. Both Jeremy Johnson and Sean White earned starts for the Tigers last year, and both are back on campus this spring. One of those two should then win the job, right? Not so fast. Johnson and White struggled for most of the 2015 season, and as a result, the entire offense struggled. In turn, Gus Malzahn and his staff are giving junior-college transfer John Franklin III – a Nick Marshall look-alike – every chance to win the starting job. Redshirt freshman Tyler Queen is also in the mix. Unlike last year, don’t expect a decision to come immediately after the spring.

ohn Franklin III continues to show early promise.

Quote
“We’ve been impressed with the way that he’s picked up all the things from the sideline — the pre-snap things,” Malzahn said following Sunday’s practice. “There’s a lot to playing quarterback in our system before the play even starts, before you even look at the defense. I’ve been very impressed with the way he’s done that. He’s a learner, he studies hard. We’re just kind of waiting until the game can become slow.

“(Auburn receivers coach) Kodi Burns the other day was talking about when he first got here in (2008) playing quarterback and how it takes a little bit until you start feeling comfortable. You can see he’s feeling more and more comfortable, but it’s just going to be a matter of time.”

During Saturday’s practice, Franklin III was one of two quarterbacks to go live along with sophomore Tyler Queen, while Sean White and Jeremy Johnson wore non-contact jerseys.

Both participated in what Malzahn dubbed a “half-scrimmage,” with the objective being to evaluate Franklin III more closely.

“He protected the football quite a bit better than he did last Saturday, which is to be expected,” Malzahn said of Franklin III, who reportedly fumbled during his first-ever scrimmage last weekend. “It’s just a matter of him feeling more comfortable. We know quite a bit about the other two guys. The other two guys have had very good practices over the last couple of weeks and we just want to make sure we get a really good evaluation on John and let him play, and see what he can do.”

Malzahn added: “We just felt like it was important, one more time, to see how he can protect the football. Just let him make some plays with his feet and stuff like that, so, it was a good evaluation from that end.”

John Franklin III will make his debut in front of Auburn fans Saturday at the Tigers’ annual A-Day scrimmage inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. He’s not the starter, of course, but he’s certainly battling and drawing high praise...

Quote
Senior defensive tackle Montravius Adams was asked a simple question: is Franklin III the fastest quarterback he has seen?

“Yeah, John Franklin is the fastest,” Adams said. “He’s gotta be. I don’t know. I’ve been watching him practice, and we’ve had two scrimmages. When he gets to the edge … there ain’t nothing else.”

Adams should know. He’s seen the likes of Johnny Manziel and Auburn’s own Nick Marshall...

“I think he’s faster than Nick,” Adams said.

Speed has never been an issue for Franklin III. His accuracy, more than anything, has been under scrutiny since his arrival from East Mississippi Community College in January. “I think it’s pretty good, but, you know, there’s always room to improve,” Adams said.

Malzahn has kept a clear-cut opinion on the three-man battle among Johnson, Franklin III and White close to the vest.

Here's the latest news and observations from Tuesday's practice:

Tyler Queen's right arm was in a sling and he was not dressed out
During the initial skeleton drill, which appeared to be focused on blitzes, Jeremy Johnson and Sean White worked with the first-team offensive line while John Franklin and Devin Adams worked with the second team

How the F can this be??  John Franklin is a blur, a rocket, a laser ... John Franklin is the greatest thing to play QB at Auburn since little Cammie.

Oh, I forgot: he can't hit the broad side of a barn from ten feet with his passes.

Jeremy Johnson brings unmatched experience, renewed confidence to Auburn quarterback battle

The Candidate: Jeremy Johnson

Credentials: 6-foot-5, 240 pounds, senior, started seven games with 12 appearances and passed for 1,054 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions and had 47 carries for 137 yards and six touchdowns in 2015

Why he might win the job: You can't teach experience and Johnson has seen more game action than any other quarterback on Auburn's roster. He's appeared in 25 games with nine starts, with a 6-3 record in those games.

Johnson is also the most prototypical of Auburn's signal callers and might have the strongest and most accurate arm.

Why he might not win: In what was supposed to be a coronation of a quarterback who spent more time under Gus Malzahn and Rhett Lashlee than any before, Johnson's 2015 season began in nightmarish fashion...

Johnson has "unmatched confidence" until he goes 1-7 with three interceptions in his first game against a good defense.  Then, not so much.

"Keep White in quarterback"

Quote
6-foot, 200 pounds, sophomore, started six games and passed for 1,166 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions in 2015

Why he might win the job: When Auburn suddenly needed a steady hand to command the offense, White delivered. With Jeremy Johnson struggling mightily...

Why he might not win: After missing three of the final four games due to injury, White returned as the starter for the Birmingham Bowl but had his worst performance of the season, tossing two interceptions and tallying just 103 yards.

One performance won't determine the outcome of an off-season competition, but White ended 2015 on a sour note. He also threw just one touchdown pass ...

"I think Sean's healthy again, so he's the old Sean that played in the Kentucky and the Arkansas game and was playing pretty well." - Offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee

"Sean White is pretty accurate." - Running back Jovon Robinson

The label of "game manager" is almost universally considered a back-handed compliment, yet nobody ever desires erratic and unpredictable play at quarterback.

It's pretty obvious Sean White is AU's best QB.  But with him Gus limits his offense severely, because good ol' Sean can't run the option running game.

Poor Gus.  I wonder who's been in charge of getting QB's for his offense that can help them succeed??

Well, yes, that would be Saint Gus.

Quote
Scarblog: ... If Sean White makes Trent Dilfer look like a genius by making reads, making plays and generally acting like "a program changer," be happy that White's healthy, but don't put odds on him to win the Heisman...

There's not much Johnson or White can do to wow anyone who watched them during last year's slog to 7-6 and 2-6. We've seen what they can do against a quality defense with bad intentions, and the only way for them to erase the bad memories of 2015 is to change the narrative starting Sept. 3 against the defending national runners-up.

Can John Franklin III make #Auburn great again? http://ow.ly/10ss8c

Quote
[Billed as] 6-foot-1, 174-pound transfer via East Mississippi Community College and Florida State. Passed for 733 yards and seven touchdowns and rushed for 451 yards and nine touchdowns [as the backup QB] last season at EMCC.

 [64-110 for 58% with 7 TDs and 2 picks.]

[The starting QB at EMCC in 2015 was Wyatt Roberts, 159-243 for 2,197 yards, 23 TDs and 2 picks.]

Franklin's confidence, blazing speed and athleticism remind Auburn's coaches of their better offensive days in 2013 and 2014 when Nick Marshall was running the show. Franklin is a fresh-faced playmaker who is arguably the fan favorite after creating quite the buzz around campus.

His size, accuracy and ball security have come into question this spring, and he's up against a pair of quarterbacks [Sean White] who have SEC experience in their back pockets.

"JF3" has worked with the second and third team offenses during the media's viewing windows of spring practice. Clint Trickett, Franklin's former coach, was impressed with what he saw during Saturday's half-scrimmage. Franklin and Tyler Queen shed their orange non-contact jerseys while Johnson and White did not go live.

"I thought he looked good," Trickett said. "He had some good drives... (Auburn's coaches) wanted to see his balance and ability to run and he showed that a little bit. He's got to take care of the ball a little more, that's the biggest thing. If he can do that, I like his chances of being able to compete for it."

Franklin is in a stiff competition with Johnson, who feels more confident and improved after 2015's wildly inconsistent performances, and White, who has bounced back from the injuries that cut his promising debut short.

Auburn’s Gus Malzahn credits defense, ‘not concerned at all’ by offense http://sec.news/23lhkmk

Quote
Malzahn said he isn’t worried about his offense’s performance. The first-team unit put up 374 yards, including an impressive 266 on the ground — but they did so against the backups. Meanwhile, the White team was held to 1.5 yards per carry against the first-team defense.

“When you rotate three quarterbacks with different groups and you have different receivers, that is a challenge,” Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. “You have to give our defense some credit on that. As far as being concerned, I am not concerned at all. I thought the defense did an outstanding job and made them earn it.”

It was, by far, the worst performance by Malzahn’s offense in an A-Day game. The 29 combined points was lower than the 24-14 final in 2015 —

Quarterbacks Sean White and Jeremy Johnson also fumbled the ball inside or near the red zone to stall drives, and White nearly threw an interception.

“I feel like our defense has a chance to be good,” Malzahn said.

An estimated crowd of 45,723 watched the game, ranking sixth overall in school history for an A-Day scrimmage. It’s the worst number since 2012, when 43,427 showed up to watch Gene Chizik‘s final spring as the Tigers’ head coach.
