Ole Miss announces $13 million upgrade for baseball facilities: http://on.thec-l.com/247Bxtv

QuoteOXFORD - Ole Miss' baseball stadium will undergo renovations and upgrades valued at $13 million, Ole Miss announced Tuesday morning.

The project will include a new baseball performance center, a field level club, more box seating, a rooftop plaza along the first base line and expansion/realignment of the left field terrace at Swayze Field. It's expected to be completed by the 2018 season.

"Ole Miss Athletics is always looking out for the welfare of our student-athletes, and the upgrading of facilities is one way to improve their entire collegiate experience," Ole Miss athletic director Ross Bjork said in a statement. "As one of our most popular and successful sports at Ole Miss, the baseball program brings so much excitement to our fans. It is only fitting that the highlight of this project is a new performance center for the baseball team."

The performance center will include a new clubhouse, training room, weight room, players' lounge, a team meeting room, indoor hitting cages and an indoor pitching tunnel.

"To have an all-inclusive performance center at the stadium is a major game changer for our guys, and it is exciting to be able to give our fans more upgraded seating options for our games," coach Mike Bianco said in a statement. "This is another great day for our program, and it would not be possible without the support of our past letter winners, the Ole Miss Athletics administration and, of course, Rebel Nation."

The Pavilion is a "game changer" for Ole Miss basketball but here's what else the $96.5 million arena can do: http://www.clarionledger.com/story/sports/college/ole-miss/2016/02/20/pavilion-paying-off-beyond-basketball/80635612/ ...

Quote"People were coming in crying, people were coming in with these grins on their face, ear to ear," said Thompson, senior associate athletic director of marketing and communications. "That reaction, those faces, I'll have those permanently imprinted in my mind."

The Pavilion was primarily built (at a cost of $96.5 million) to host basketball games, replacing the 50-year-old C.M. Tad Smith Coliseum. But it also serves as a gathering place for students during the week and will be open to the public on football game days with Vaught-Hemingway Stadium nearby.

The new arena, however, can provide Ole Miss with more.

Thompson said he's spoken with people interested in hosting many different types of events at the Pavilion. The arena held a Jan. 24 concert headlined by country music star Brad Paisley, and there are plans to host between three and five concerts a year.

"The Pavilion was built and designed for that type of event in mind, from the rigging to the load-bearing trusses and things like that, the retractables (seats)," Thompson said. "It's designed and built to have major acts in there. And the acoustics are incredible. It definitely opens up a lot of new doors."

Except due to size limitations a group that could have a crowd twice as big in the FedEx Forum in Memphis is not going to go play in the Pavilion without someone paying them big bucks to do so.
If I'm going to cheer players and coaches in victory, I damn sure ought to be man enough to stand with them in defeat.

Towers: Indoor practice facility now 'a top priority' at Miami http://sec.news/1TLSQxt

QuoteMiami is one of only four Power 5 teams in college football that does not have an indoor practice facility at the moment. And apparently that number is about to be reduced by one as Boston College now has plans under way to build a permanent facility (it currently uses an inflatable bubble set-up over its stadium field)...

Miami, you may recall, is coached by Mark Richt. Of course, Richt pined years about getting one at Georgia. He eventually did, but wasn't able to stick around long to see it happen. Construction began in mid-December, or about two weeks after Richt was fired.

Not coincidentally, I suspect, Miami Athletic Director Blake James came out recently and called the Hurricanes' need for an indoor practice facility "a top priority." He said they are actively seeking a major donors.

"Everyone recognizes how important it is for the long-term success of our program," James said.

One might wonder why Miami, with its year-round warm weather, might be in the market for such a building. Actually, the Hurricanes struggle more than most programs with weather-related issues. According to the Post, the Hurricanes endured 15 rain-delayed, postponed or canceled practices in 2014...

Georgia looking at improvements to Stegeman Coliseum.
https://www.dawgnation.com/mens-basketball/georgialookingatimprovementstostegemancoliseum ...

QuoteNASHVILLE — Georgia is hoping to undertake a number of internal improvements to Stegeman Coliseum, including the long-awaited center-hanging scoreboard.

There is no money figure being put on it yet, and most other specifics will wait until the May meeting of the UGA athletic board. But athletics director Greg McGarity confirmed that enhancements will be sought.

"There are things on the horizon with Stegeman, and other facilities," McGarity said Thursday at Bridgestone Arena...

McGarity said that of the $30.2 million budgeted for the indoor facility, nearly $24 million has been pledged, while about $10 million of that is already on hand in cash. So that helps as the project is being built.

UGA also had to dip into the reserve fund to pay buyouts to football coaches totaling just over $6 million.

As for men's basketball – long a distant second to football in revenue production – things are looking up financially, according to McGarity.  The attendance average this season was the best in five years, and that was without the benefit of a Kentucky game. A number of Saturday sell-outs helped.

Georgia Bulldogs will conduct their practices somewhere other than the historic Woodruff Practice Fields.

Georgia opens spring practice on Tuesday and will do so at UGA's Club Sports complex

QuoteBulldogs had to find an alternative work space as construction on their new $30 Indoor Athletic Facility is well under way and has essentially consumed the entire lot behind Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall. And it's going to be that way for a while.

Georgia took one of its FieldTurf — or artificial turf — fields from the Woodruff complex and re-installed it on the Club Sports grounds. The school also renovated the one existing natural-grass on the location and built a second natural-grass field. So now they have three 90-yard fields side-by-side-by-side.

The Bulldogs also dressed up the area nicely. They built new black metal fencing around the three fields — complete with built-in "power Gs" —  installed FieldTurf in the common areas — again, with a giant power G — added lighting so that there are now 12 huge light poles surrounding all three fields, brought in trailers for football operations, media, training and medical treatment, and landscaped the whole area.

Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity estimated the total cost of securing and retro-fitting the temporary setup to be about $1 million.

Reported that it's about 3 miles by car from the current practice facility and UGa has put in some trailers for the coaches.

QuoteAdditionally, the McCommons, who own one of the nation's largest charter bus companies, have committed to provide $125,000 in transportation to support Freeze's recruiting efforts.

Their most recent gift will help support future capital projects, said Keith Carter, senior associate athletics director for development and executive director of the Ole Miss Athletics Foundation.

"We are so thankful for generous Rebel fans like John and Donna McCommon who love to support our programs. Their contributions significantly improve our ability to be competitive," Carter said. "The McCommons have been hugely supportive of Ole Miss Athletics. We are extremely grateful to them and feel honored to know them."

The $150 million Forward Together campaign was launched in 2011 to strengthen Ole Miss Athletics in its continuous commitment to excellence. With the help of 3,425 donors, the ambitious campaign surpassed it original goal in November 2015, raising $155 million. The campaign conceptualized 10 to 14 capital projects, including the gleaming Pavilion at Ole Miss – a $95 million arena that seats approximately 9,500 fans for basketball games, concerts and other events.

After down year at gate, UF hopes O'Dome renovations spark ticket sales - via @Gator_sports http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20160329/ARTICLES/160329653/1136/FRONTPAGE ...

Tim Casey/UAA Communications

Quote

As Florida began the demolition phase of the O'Connell Center renovation project last weekend, there's hope that a new building interior will result in more fans passing through the turnstiles.

Simply put, Florida basketball wasn't as hot a ticket in 2015-16. Average attendance dipped 8.4 percent to 9,686 fans this past season, UF's lowest attendance figures since averaging 9,018 fans in 1998-99.

Florida associate athletic director Mike Hill said a number of factors contributed to the decline, including having three key home games — Florida State (Dec. 29), Georgia (Jan. 2) and Kentucky (March 1) at a time when students weren't on campus. In addition, Florida was coming off a 16-17 season, its first losing year since 1997-98.

"The reality is we were coming off a losing season, our first losing season in almost 20 years," Hill said. "That coupled with the fact that we also had some dropoffs with our student attendance this year, but if you look at the way the schedule fell, we caught some bad breaks in terms of having two or three games at home during university breaks."

Hill said the transition from future Hall of Fame coach Billy Donovan to first-year coach Mike White didn't have a big impact on attendance, noting season ticket sales were at its second-highest level in the past five seasons. Florida went 21-15 in White's first season and 12-4 at home.

"It wasn't that we had a huge dropoff in season ticket sales," Hill said. "I think our single-game sales were down and our student attendance was down."

The $64.5 million renovation project, designed to improve fan amenities, could have a positive impact. Capacity of the arena will be reduced close to 1,000, from about 11,500 to 10,500, with all chairback seating.

Hill said a high level of sensitivity is being taken into account when it comes to re-seating longtime season ticket holders.

"We've had people who have had seats for 30 years," Hill said. "It's a challenge. The math makes it impossible to keep everyone in their same seats and to keep everybody happy based on their current location. But we do believe as people see the new building, they will be thrilled with the change and the result of the building. The reality is it's a 35-year-old building and it's time."

With the goal of the renovation to be complete in time for December graduation, Hill said Florida plans to christen the new building with a non-conference game before Christmas. Hill said he doesn't expect the first game to be against a big-name program, due to current and future scheduling commitments.

"We think the excitement about the facility itself will bring people to opening night," Hill said.

Florida associate athletic director of internal affairs Chip Howard said the new stands will remain close to the court.

"Our fans are going to be right on top of the court, as they always have been and the O'Connell Center is going to be as loud, if not louder, as it's always been," Howard said. "So we're looking forward to re-creating that intimidating atmosphere that's been here in the past."

Mitch Barnhart believes that construction cranes represent progress and he's trying to keep plenty of hard hats busy building his department in the most literal sense.

QuoteThe biggest, a $126 million renovation to the football team's Commonwealth Stadium, was all but completed before the start of last season, although finishing touches continued into the new year. The most significant remaining addition?

"We're going to put (blue) bleacher backs on a good chunk more of the seats in the lower bowl and the first eight rows of the upper level on the Cooper Drive side," Barnhart said. "That's the biggest piece, to continue to provide some comfort for our fans. We'll get all that done probably by July 31. We hope anyway."

A much more important project to Barnhart – and for the football program – is the $45 million training facility and adjacent practice fields under construction in the shadow of the stadium.

"We want to get that thing done in July and get that ready to go with by Aug. 1," in time for preseason camp, Barnhart said. "The weather has thrown us a little bit of a curve ball with all the wet and all the cold. We've really struggled to get in there and get the fields going, but I think we're picking the pace up on that and should be OK. The training center will definitely be done. The fields, we hope to be. We think they should be.

"But if we don't, we've always got (the previous) practice fields. Might have a little inconvenience for a couple weeks, two or three weeks, but we should be OK."

Looking further down the road, Kentucky baseball seemed to suffer a significant blow when its plans for a much-needed new stadium on campus were scratched from the school's wish list...

And finally, Barnhart cleared up the $21 million renovation to sparkling, 4-year-old Wildcat Coal Lodge – where the men's basketball team lives – that showed up on UK's wish list in Bevin's budget proposal. Many reacted to that line item with incredulity: Basketball needs more? Isn't that place still new?

"Well, that's not a Wildcat Lodge renovation," Barnhart said. "We've talked about adding some pieces to a wellness center, or trying to create kind of a wellness center, for all student-athletes as we think our way through all the pieces of the puzzle that are so important in today's world, whether that's physical health, nutrition, the sports psychology and leadership pieces that we're doing."

MSU hopes to break ground on the new Dudy Noble Field next June http://on.thec-l.com/1RYz2nc

QuoteState plans to break ground on a new baseball stadium next June, but a few hurdles remain in the path, athletic director Scott Stricklin announced in his weekly newsletter on Wednesday.

Stricklin said the project to build a new Dudy Noble Field was initially approved for $40 million. However, estimates now place the plans at $55 million. Mississippi State can't break ground until it receives approval by the IHL. Once it does, MSU plans to start construction in June 2017 and have enough construction in place by spring 2018 to host baseball games.

Stricklin also released plans for renovations of Davis Wade Stadium and Humphrey Coliseum. He listed restrooms, concessions, concourses and possibly premium seating as upgrades to the Hump.

Updates to Davis Wade Stadium would include renovating the east concourse to match the work done on the west and north concourses. Stricklin also wrote about plans to upgrade the Floyd Wade Club...

UT seeks input on Neyland Stadium renovations

QuoteIn a letter dated April 19, the Tennessee athletic director wrote to "Volunteers Supporter(s)" seeking assistance in helping the athletic department develop renovation plans for the school's 95-year-old stadium.

An online survey was linked to the letter, delivered via email, to be completed once by each supporter.

"This (renovation) project is absolutely critical to the future of the Tennessee football program and our dedicated fan base," Hart wrote. "Your time and feedback is greatly valued and appreciated by Tennessee Athletics and the Tennessee Fund team."

The renovation study will likely be completed before the upcoming football season, according to Tennessee, and the gathered information will have no impact on the seven-game home schedule that begins Sept. 3.

Renderings have been created by Populous, the architecture firm Tennessee is working with, but they're conceptual in nature and have not been released to the general public. Images were a part of the survey.

UT spent about $140 million renovating Neyland Stadium from 2005-10, with an initial master plan in 2004 featuring five phases of renovation. Three phases were concluded by 2010: work on the north and west concourses, Gate 21 and construction of the Peyton Manning Locker Room.

The final two phases —the south and east concourses and the south entry way — were not finished. Huebner said the project team is "fully aware and cognizant of the much needed improvements" to the south and east sides of the stadium, "such as widening concourses, expanding restrooms, and improving concessions. These items are all primary objectives of the next renovation."

"This may be the last major renovation to Neyland Stadium for foreseeable decades, so we need to get it right," Huebner added.

QuoteFor three months, Tommy Moffitt's office will consist of a table shoved in the corner of LSU's indoor practice facility resting on top of slabs of wood.

"We've got to go somewhere," the LSU strength and conditioning coach smiled. "I've got a laptop."

LSU's weight room on Thursday will shift a few feet out of the football operations building and into the adjoining indoor facility. Construction crews built a 6,300-square foot temporary weight room by laying wood on top of the field's artificial turf and erecting wooden walls, equipped, even, with wooden doors.

For the next three months, this will serve as the weight room for a group of LSU sports teams, including football, while the current facility undergoes a $2.5 million face lift.

QuoteThe 1,433-word post on CoachCal.com included a call for improvement to the atmosphere at Rupp Arena so that it becomes "the preeminent home-court advantage in basketball." Calipari continued: "Since I've gotten here, little has changed in the game-day atmosphere of that historical gym."

He also posed an interesting question that has been on the back burner for some time now.

"Will a new arena be in our future?" Calipari wondered. "I don't know, but either way our iconic building needs to give us a great advantage on many fronts."

This was a sticking point for Pitino who could not get an on campus arena approved.

Rupp Arena is about a mile away from campus and is downtown.

MU's Kirsten Mack on facilities: "Coach E is still able to get recruits here. That's a testament to him because our facilities aren't good."
