Will Rick Neuheisel make any difference for UCLA?

Hogginitall

I heard Aundre Dean is going to start for them.  You all remember him?  I think we were in his top 2.

Hogbody

I don't think it will even be close honestly

SEC only loses one game opening weekend.

NuttinItUp

What about with the points? (Tennessee is favored by 7)

Hogginitall

UCLA has some trends in their favor.

QuoteTennessee at UCLA

This intersectional matchup might need explaining, as Tennessee starts on the Left Coast for a second consecutive season. The Volunteers believe they can compete in the SEC East with Georgia and Florida, with the coaches having made the proper adjustments. Junior Jonathan Crompton has the size and arm strength to be a stud at quarterback and has talented receivers to throw to like Lucas Taylor. Tennessee is 9-4 against the spread in season openers. The Vols are a 7.5-point road favorite and are 18-9 ATS in this role over the last 10 seasons.

UCLA comes into the first game of the Rick Neuheisel era, with a laundry list of injuries, including having to go with junior transfer Kevin Craft as signal caller. At least Craft can throw to speedsters like Dominique Johnson on the perimeter.  The offensive line has been reworked and no true stud has emerged as running back. Last year's frustrating squad had to lean on defense and only five starters return from that group. With all that has gone wrong, credit goes to the former Bruins quarterback Neuheisel, attempting to resurrect head coaching career, by saying this about everything that has gone wrong, "This creates opportunity for other young men to step up."

When looking at the two teams and the present situation, why is Tennessee not at least a nine-point favorite?  For starters, the UCLA players will be jazzed for new coach and national cable television exposure, before the home fans. The Bruins are 12-2 SU and ATS in home openers (1-1 with Vols) and 17-4 ATS as home underdogs. Also, UCLA is 9-2 against the number versus ranked teams as a home team catching points.

The Blue and Yellow clad Bruins have a shot if they can control the five returning offensive linemen from Tennessee from opening up holes as large as the nearby I-210 freeway, being 8-0 ATS in home games, when they allow 3.5 to 4 rushing yards per attempt.

I was listening to The Herd and they were saying that UCLA's line is depleted.  Like they don't have anything.  Tenn by 21

The real Hogules

Tennessee will/should run away with it, even on the road.
They're the better team when you consider athletes, but in all honesty UCLA does have the better coaching staff.
The bottom line is that the coaching staffs aren't allowed to participate in the actual game, so I'm sticking with UT as the eventual winner of the contest.
Bobby's back and he ain't here to paint!

I wouldn't be surprised to see Tenn win by 30 points or so.

NuttinItUp

Voting is pretty decisive. I hope the game turns out that decisively. ;)

Absolutely.  Chow will make a tremendous difference as OC but it may not be this year.

UCLA doesn't have much. Chow could make it interesting. The new OC for TN could struggle. TN doesn't really have a QB yet. TN should win but a couple of turnovers by TN's new spread offense and this game could swing the other way fast.

LSU might differ with you on the QB.  He just about wrecked their ship.  He had a ruff night against us in Fayetteville but the Hog defense played very good that night.

As we have seen, a new offense can cause problems.  If it does for Tennessee, UCLA will be in the game.

Tennessee should win this one, and it shouldn't be too close.   For all of the valid criticisms of Tennessee football over the past decade or so, one that can't be leveled at them is ineffective play on the DL, or the interior of the LB core.   UCLA's OL issues still haven't been solved, and they're going to have a tough time keeping their QB clean to make plays against the TN secondary.

I had said earlier in the week I would go all SEC except for 1.  Well I'm finding it very hard to pull for TN.  I'm already sick of hearing Rocky Top.

I know!  Less than 10 minutes into the year, and I'm ready to throw a brick at the TV just because of Rocky Top.

Was glad TN went for and missed the FG.  UCLA D brought it on those last two plays.  Damn I hate that Fat Frank Fulmer.

Yeah; I'm just not seeing UCLA sustaining anything against TN tonight, though.    Crompton's making mistakes, but they all seem more easily corrected than the scattershot UCLA approach to offense.

I'm torn about this one, I normally root for the SEC team in these situations, but d*** I hate Tennessee.

Maybe UCLA can win this on turnovers and special teams play....

That'd piss off a lot of TN fans who are already baying for Fulmer's head.

TN defense isn't great, that QB just can't throw to his own man.  It might be against his morals.

I typed the comment thinking about the run. UCLA can't have 20 yards rushing. Both QBs are weak.

This game is showing why you star gazers need to leave the recruiting to the coaches ratings.  Crompton was a 5 star and looks like a no star.  He may improve but this game will be determined by the best of the worst QB's.

Tennessee defense is killing the UCLA running game.  UCLA will have to throw which is bad.  What is their longest run, 7 yards.

He's been good for a while.  2,400 yards on 519 career carries entering tonight (4.6 per), and 22 TDs.

TN should be up at least 2 touchdowns.  They are going to give this game away.
