This is the first post I've seen on this thread that has a legitimate complaint against Skip.

I would prefer a coach with experience as a head coach of a school in a BCS conference. TT would've been great. I could live with Tommy B. However, Skip just doesn't have the resume I'm looking for.

On the other hand, if the U of A has to choose between a coach with no head coaching experience or a guy like Holz, then I can live with hiring Holz.

I just don't want to roll the dice with a rookie coach. I don't think that a guy like that would be what we need right now. After all the drama of the past year, the program needs a steady hand to guide it.

So, I guess what I'm saying is: I hope we can do better than Skip Holtz, but I'll be fine with it if it's the best we can do. I would rather have him than someone completely unproven like Gus or Herring.

Here is my post from a few days back that ended up being immediately sent to the trash can.  Sad thing is, I was trying to come up with a really bad D list hire, turns out it could be true. I'm pretty sure Nutt is going to get the last laugh no matter who the hire is.

I graduated from High School in Fayetteville with Skip.  (  FHS '82 in case you wonder )  and he is  good guy.  Saw him at our 20 year reunion when he was at USCEast .  At our picnic with everyone's kids there,  he spent the time talking to each of the kids and telling them about USCEast.  I am sure that was some kind of recruiting violation there!

He has done pretty well at ECU and UCONN,  but I do want to "dream" bigger.   But,  really,  JUST HIRE A #^#@@&% coach already!!!!!

A little harsh here...skip as HC with GM as OC isn't bad, is it JJ, TT, or BD no but if they don't want to come, they don't want to come, throwing $'S around really isn't a factor with those guys. What the worst outcome is, is throwing around alot of $'s for a coach who isn't worth it, Tommy Bowden fits that bill.

          Lou took the South Carolina job so he could turn it over to his son in a few years. South Carolina agreed to this, and Skip was made OC. After 3 yrs. South Carolina not being able to move the ball, SC said he had to be replaced as OC. He ended up at E. Car. an has done an OK Job. South Carolina did not want him, an we have someone who has proved he can move the football in the SEC. Why Skip?

1) Skip was NOT ready for prime time when he coached at South Carolina as offensive coordinator. His dad may have been a great coach in his prime at locations where the recruiting was fertile. At South Carolina, he was another in a long line of failures. His dad did indeed take the reins of the offense after repeated failures -- not all his fault, perhaps, but he was the central player in the failure of the offense.
2) Skip was indeed expected to be named the head coach at South Carolina. It was one of the reasons his dad took the job, setting up his son. South Carolina REJECTED him because they thought they could do better and ended up with Spurrier. The Holtzes were shown the door after a 6-win season that ended with an embarrassing brawl at Clemson.                  
3) There is nothing about South Carolina's offense that could be described  as particularly imaginative or innovative. I haven't looked up stats, but it was not pretty. Spurrier hasn't won any championships either, but he has been a marked improvement (and he would be a great choice if he wanted to leave.)
4) It is obvious he has had some success at East Carolina-- but if we are going to take a total flier on someone at this level, I'd much rather take a flier on Gus Malzahn (who at least knows the landscape, has been hugely successful in two years, has developed great players in his high school role, and can hit the ground running in recruiting.) I respect Gus, but have not been pushing him -- but if we are going to the East Carolina/Tulsa/Tulane/Appalachian State level, I'm all for Gus.
5) Those who bashed Tommy Bowden during the past two days are going to live to regret it, is my prediction.  Holtz is a HUGE drop from Bowden. There is no comparison.  If you have seen both teams play during both coaches' rein, there is simply no comparison.    
6) If Holtz is the guy, I'll support him. At the end, I was an anybody-but-Nutt fan, and he's the guy, I'm 100% behind him.

Spurrier is having trouble enough moving the ball at S.C., although I agree that it's concerning that SC didn't want him.

After looking at his record, he isn't as bad as I thought- his team played Va Tech close (L 17-7), beat NC (yep, butches team) 34-31, beat UCF (that Tulsa couldn't hang with, either time they played) 52-38, and won and lost a couple more that don't really stand out.  I don't think he should be anywhere near the top of the list, and I know BD is the better coach (recruiting, mainly), but he doesn't seem all that bad.

of course, this is all just an opinion of mine.  no need to flame etc.
