The "super bowl of bass fishing" to be held this weekend on Lake Hartwell in South Carolina. Arkansas anglers who qualified are Mark Davis (Mt. Ida), Scott Rook (LR), Stephen Browning (Hot Springs), Mike McClelland (Bella Vista) and Kevin Short (Mayflower). Short's qualification is amazing considering he missed an event due to his home being destroyed by tornado last spring.  Water temps are in the 40's with a cold week ahead.  The big surprise is Kevin Van Dam did not qualify for this years classic.

Opening day temperature for Friday launch is 9 degrees with a high of 29. Practice has been difficult with rod guides freezing.
$300,000 first place should keep em motivated though.

going to be tough fishing in those conditions . sounds like this one will go to the ''slow down' guys . the ones who are good deep water specialists should fair well

Wonder why the payday went down? 1st place used to pay 500k. Maybe second thru whatever gets more $$ now.

Industry struggling as sponsors are dropping (Chevy quit FLW tour this year). Of course, the payoff is on the endorsement side for the winner.

How's the expo Scott? I was at one where no one cared about meeting Bill Dance, Hank Parker, Roland Martin, etc. - but they were lined up around the block to meet the crew from "Swamp People"

Local band from NWA, Backroad Anthem is there sponsored by Ugly Stik, playing in their booth at the Expo and a big show Saturday night!  My son is in the band, said they're having a big time!

No. It should be announced tomorrow. Rumors are flying about Toho and even Grand Lake again.

I'd love to see them come back to Grand but bet they head to Florida after three frigid classics.

Dang, I was pulling for Tak!

I figured he had it in the bag after coming into the final day as the leader

But congrats to Casey Ashley- winning by nearly 4 pounds is an impressive feat

I hope they don't move it to late March. Classic supposed to be a test. Heck I can even catch bass in late March.

jrulz83

The mentality that drives moving the date is; since it is the biggest event of the year, shouldn't they have it when the fishing is the hottest?  Average people want to see big numbers on the scales. It's the same mentality of fan that wants to see 70-56 football scores. I prefer it to be tough, but if they want to appeal to the "masses" they'll move it to a warmer weather time on the calendar.

It's also supposed to a money maker and biggest event to get exposure for the sport. Competing with the NFL Combine and Daytona 500 is probably the bigger reasons for moving out of this week on the calendar.

With all due respect, how does it compete with Daytona and Combine when it is not even televised? ESPN tried and quit live coverage of the Classic years ago. It doesn't garner any newspaper or TV coverage beyond the host city. It is strictly a niche event at best - though huge to fishing fans (like myself) and industry members. Will watching KVD, Skeet or Ike "bed fishing" seriously grow the sport? I doubt it. They can grow sport by making it more affordable to the general public and not forcing $60,000 boats and $15 crank baits down your throat.  It's funny that the winner of this years classic won on a homemade bait his Dad "poured" for him.

Yea people think golf is an expensive sport, it has nothing on fishing.
Oddball on NWA: "I'm drinking wine and eating cheese, and catching some rays, you know. "

I love to bass fish, golf and used to team rope, bass fishing is the most expensive by far of the (3) still love it though and hope to get another boat someday, sold mine years ago, just golf now..
