Quote from: popcornhog on May 02, 2024, 07:12:43 amWe are arguably 2 or 3 in a big picture historical lense.

We have had way more sustained success than Florida but they have two national titles to our one so certainly they have a case for number 2.

As it stands today - I think most people would consider us the fourth or fifth best program at the moment with the potential to quickly sky rocket to 2.

Bama is steady at 2 right now though, imo, not in a historical sense, but in a what have you don't for me in the past few years lense.
SEC coaches ranked the Arkansas job third best in the SEC back in 2019, which made a lot of sense at the time. Today, I think we've safely moved past Florida.

Mark Pope at Kentucky will be a great experiment about how much infrastructure matters in modern college basketball.

I have no faith Alabama would hit on another coach right away if Nate Oats hit the road. Same with Auburn and Bruce Pearl. I need to see multiple coaches have success before I believe it's the job, not the coach.

100% agree.  This is where I will always be grateful for Muss - he modernized our program.

Quote from: TNRazorbacker on April 29, 2024, 08:15:21 pmArkansas has been a second tier program for most of the last 25 years prior to Muss. We've always had top tier potential though, just woefully underperformed. I think we've turned the corner now with people in charge that understand the potential and willing to do what's needed to realize it.  With resources and history Arkansas should be regarded the second best bb program in the SEC. That stature is largely what got is into the SEC to begin with.
Mike Anderson was third in the SEC in wins over his eight years at Arkansas. A second tier program doesn't fire their coach for the results he had.

Even Stan Heath was canned after consecutive tournaments. John Pelphrey, after a disastrous year 2 or 3, was shoved out the door after posting an improved record with an elite recruiting class on deck.

I think Arkansas has carried ourselves as a big program in basketball. The Dana Altman embarrassment took a long time to shake off and underwhelming tournament results combined with frustrating recruit misses (Ricardo Ratliffe, Archie Goodwin, KeVaughn Allen, Malik Monk, Reggie Perry) just made it feel like the program was stuck in neutral when the program should actually be a Ferrari flying the down highway at 100 mph.

Musselman unlocked that potential in the modern era.
