Bielema had 30 players drafted while he was HC at Wisconsin (counting the 5 Wisky guys this year)

According to the scout rankings

1 5*
3 4*
11 3*

Good numbers and what I've been saying all along...CBB knows how to find, evaluate, and DEVELOP players to fit his system....+1

This is why we can hold onto an optimistic view of our future and why Bielema appears to be a good fit for Arkansas.

But we also have to consider the difference in the in-conference competition and how they recruit.  Relative to Wisconsin, it is easier to recruit to Arkansas.  But we don't get to play Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Nebraska, Indiana, Purdue... whose recruiting bases aren't very good.
Quote from: MaconBacon on March 22, 2018, 10:30:04 amWe had a good run in the 90's and one NC and now the whole state still laments that we are a top seed program and have kids standing in line to come to good ole Arkansas.  We're just a flash in the pan boys.

bigred223

ATL that's very true. However, our class this year is on par with most of the SEC. If we continue our upward trend in recruiting, perhaps BB will still be able to win through superior development and evaluation. I feel good about our chances if we continue recruiting in the top 15-25 year in and year out.

Yes and add retention.  It is our hope.

On top of developing players, what I really like is the fact that we are going out of state and winning head to head recruiting battles against top teams. Getting Collins, Kirkland, Merrick out of Florida is huge, I expect us to continue to improve in recruiting as we start winning on the field too.

kp72204

this is very optimistic, however i BELIEVE we are in store for some good times ahead. i'm ready to become a relevant national powerhouse.

WhatsitHOGabout

I know this is hard to believe but recruiting to Fayetteville against Madison is not even close.  Recruiting to an SEC school makes it even better.  I think he knew what he was doing moving down south to increase his chances of winning a National Championship.  Which is what he said to begin with.

Is anybody still missing Harley Petrino?

Thanks for putting in the effort into compiling these stats. Certainly points out CBB's history of being able to take kids that may not be the highest rated at their positions and developing many into excellent players before they graduated. BTW IMO that ability has very little, if any, relationship to what conference in which he might be coaching.

hhicNaychaBoi

He has done a good job recruiting and developing players but I don't think he should get too much credit for Russell Wilson because he was on 5th year transfer that began his career at NC State. Other than that he has been great and the future is very bright at Arkansas.

Great post. One of very few here on this site.

Winning is what matters.

What it has to do with the NFL:  Producing NFL players is nice.  It can make for more interesting NFL games following the former Hogs and help in recruiting.  But it is by far secondary to winning.  In the context of winning, producing more would suggest we have a better chance at winning.  However, he is now facing many more programs capable of producing NFL talent at a higher rate as well.  Like you said-double edged.

I think he can and will compete for championships too every so often.

Well considering how many were drafted out of his whisky lowly ranked classes I would say his classed were right there with SEC classes.  Would love to see a comparison how many the SEC schools had drafted in the same time periods.  I have a feeling it would show even more positive things.

Did you watch Russell Wilson in college? Have you taken a look at his stats at NC State and compared them to his stats st Wisconsin?

Great stuff, Jack. I appreciate your effort on this.

Bielema did produce great results from lower ranking recruiting classes at Wisconsin and so one would think that with better recruiting classes at Arkansas, that he can get more out of them as well. The problem is, which I think he has come to realize, is the difference in average talent levels between the two conferences.

Look at this years classes for each conference as an example and where they placed in terms of average stars for the class of their schools.

Avg Star rating range              Teams from SEC          Teams from Big Ten
4.00 down to 3.43                            5                                 2
3.40 down to 3.18                            6                                 2
3.14 down to 2.89                            3                                 2
2.84 down to 2.59                            0                                 6
2.58 down to 0.00                            0                                 2

As you can see, over half of the Big Ten's Schools classes this year came in under an average of 2.84 stars as a class. A little different story in the SEC.

You see similar results as that of the Big Ten in the Pac 12 and the ACC. The Big 12 on the other hand has only 2 teams in that top tier of 4.00 to 3.43, none in the 2nd tier, 4 in the third tier, 2 in the 4th tier and 2 that come in below 2.59 stars per class.

I like what Bielema is getting done and the energy and focus that this staff puts into recruiting, but they are going to have to do that because everyone in the SEC does a great job of recruiting the upper levels of talent, compared to other conferences.

Great analysis and the conclusion that CBB should put more players in the NFL from Arkansas is good with a couple of caveats. The SEC West schedule Arkansas has to play every year will likely take a larger injury toll than the Big 10 schedule, and players just don't look quite so good to NFL scouts when playing against SEC talent week after week.... and for that reason I doubt the number of players ultimately drafted will be much different. Even with better players here, fewer ending up in the NFL is a remote possibility, but I like the fact he seems to be doing a much better job recruiting than some of our past coaches....

IMO your rationale is somewhat fuzzy in logic. True at UW he didn't have to play the likes of UF, 'Bama, UGA, LSU and others; however, the whole point is NOT necessarily the level of competition between the two leagues but rather THE DEVELOPMENT OF TALENT he accomplished with the kids he recruited and were on his roster. Not as much a question of your competition as much as how you as a HC are able to identify and develop often under recognized (at least by various recruiting services) recruits.

Ultimately to me as an Arkansas fan I care less about whether or not a kid is actually drafted into the NFL, but rather how he performs as a Hog. No doubt it's great to have a kid who's able to perform well enough to be drafted to the NFL and draw all the praise and attention; however, we've also seen time and time again players who've performed at very high levels on the Hill that haven't necessarily gone on to stellar pro careers. While I'll always wish a Razorback great success in whatever he does after leaving Fayetteville, as a HOG fan I'm ultimately more concerned with what a young man does while playing for my home state's flagship team.

The most encouraging part is that the *s per player do seem to trend upward. We may get to places we thought we couldn't on the recruiting trail.
