Ross Bjork provides an update on the facilities and much more

QuoteMoving on to facilities, the renovation of the north end zone of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, as well as other additions such as a new sound system, anchored video boards and LED lights, are nearing completion. What type of difference do you think the improvements will make on game-day experience?

"I'm not sure who's more addicted to our construction cameras, me or our fans. I was in Jackson (Thursday) and I had two guys come up to me, and they're like, 'Man, we hit refresh on the website every five minutes. We want to see the updates.' And I'm like, 'Man, you're more addicted than me.' People are so fired up about these improvements. They're interested in how it's going to affect the game-day experience, and so are we. We can't wait to turn the lights on here. We hope we can turn the lights on for a night scrimmage on August 15 for the football team. The video boards will be fired up sometime the week of August 15, and have those testing and ready to go. The stadium itself will be substantially complete August 22, which is that Monday. That gives us three weeks to clean, move stuff in, get concessions ready, number the seats and just do all the things to prep for that opening game. If you haven't been in our stadium, really, since the last game of last year, or if you haven't been in our stadium, let's say, since 2012, you're going to walk in and be like, 'Where am I?' You're going to have crystal-clear sound with a surround-sound audio system; you're going to have three brand new, the brightest, most high-definition video boards on the market in the stadium; you're going to have the north end zone enclosed; you're going to have 2,000 more students in the seats; you're going to have a grass field. It's just a brand new experience and a brand new environment. And I forgot about the lights. Once we have a night game — our first two games are in the afternoon, so we won't be able to use them — but once we have a night game, it's going to be an atmosphere we haven't had before. What the right word is? It's probably just transformational —

Is there an update you can provide on the NCAA investigation? As in, has the status of the investigation changed in any way? Timeline, findings, etc.

"Obviously it's been a well-versed topic of conversation around here, really, I guess, since late January of this year. I think for something that we're not allowed to talk about, if you will, I think (Ole Miss head football) coach (Hugh) Freeze has been front and center on this...

QuoteLSU plans to spend the next two years creating additional restrooms and concessions while renovating and potentially expanding the existing ones in the 93-year-old venue, said Eddie Nunez, LSU's deputy director of athletics.

Officials are also evaluating the long-term future of the south end zone dormitories, even toying with the idea of demolishing them to provide a more "open" area to fans, Nunez said.

Crews have finished cleaning out the south end zone and other dormitories in the stadium. Some of the now-empty dormitories are options to house new concessions or restrooms, Nunez said. The wait time at concessions and restrooms is a contentious topic among fans, something they've voiced to the administration in surveys the program distributed more than a year ago.

The dorms, built 1953, are located on the first few levels, well beneath the school's 2-year-old south end zone addition and beneath the existing south end zone lower bowl.

QuoteSouth Carolina will play on a new basketball floor next season.

"We just recently took coach (Dawn) Staley's input, coach (Frank) Martin's input and I shared a little bit," athletic director Ray Tanner said on Thursday. "We have designed a new floor and we're anticipating that we will have a new floor in place before the first game, hopefully even a little bit earlier."

The new design, the third court layout for the 14-year-old building, will not feature the "bridge" logo – "South Carolina" stretching from 3-point line to 3-point line above the school's Block C logo. Tanner confirmed the new floor will probably be just the Block C, plus a few smaller touches.

"I think a palmetto tree, "Gamecocks" in the end zone ... it's a good-looking floor, a very classy good-looking floor," he said.

Tanner also said that Williams-Brice Stadium will have a new banner facing Bluff Road, the location of a former banner of coach Steve Spurrier. He wouldn't say what the new image would be, but he was hopeful it would be completed before the Sept. 17 home opener

USC's $50 million football operations building is facing Phase II approval in September. If all goes well, Tanner estimated that ground could be broken at the end of the year, or the beginning of next year.

QuoteGeorgia late-summer thunderstorms have been something the Bulldogs have had to negotiate regularly. That has always been the case since UGA hasn't had indoor practice facility, but it's especially problematic now that they're having to bus three miles away to the Club Sports Complex on South Milledge.

But inclement weather is just one of the factors that Smart alludes to when discussing the need for an indoor practice area. The heat the team is having to endure every day is another.

"If we had an indoor practice facility, we'd probably go in it once every three days," Smart said after Tuesday's weather-delayed practice. What I've found over time at other places I've been is your legs recover when you go inside. And we have no recovery right now. We can't hide from the heat. We have nowhere to go. You an either shorten practice [sic] or cut a practice off. There's no good way around it. So it's not as much the weather as much as it is the heat."

The good news is Smart is not going to have to wait too long. Georgia's new Indoor Athletic Facility, as the Bulldogs like to call it, is coming out of the ground fast. It won't be finished during this season but, according to UGA officials, construction on the $31 million building should be completed before the end of the year.

Nearly a year ago, Ben Howland stepped on campus as the new architect in the renovation of Mississippi State basketball. But a critical flaw lingered within the program. One that Howland noticed the first time he stepped on the court at Humphrey Coliseum.

MSU's new basketball court design includes all 82 state counties

Quote"Bottom line, it's really a hard surface that doesn't have a lot of give," Howland told The Clarion-Ledger. "The No. 1 thing that's important in flooring is to make sure that's its good for your players in terms of their physical well-being. That thing is an older floor that sorely, in my opinion, needs to be replaced."

A new floor costs approximately $130,000. Mississippi State is preparing to install a new permanent court by the start of the 2016-17 season that will replace the current portable flooring, which will be 15 years old when it is removed in July.

"It's just going to be a better surface for them but not interfere with the other things that we need to have from commencement to concerts," said Jay Logan, Mississippi State's head of facilities and event management at Humphrey Coliseum. "We can still do that. That's just the beauty of the technology of the floor construction."

The new court is one of a number of ways Howland is using advanced technology to better prepare his players for the marathon of a basketball season. While no one is drawing a direct line between the outdated playing surface and seven knee injuries and two back surgeries since 2009, four of the knee injuries occurred inside Humphrey Coliseum. That's a group that includes current Bulldogs Johnny Zuppardo (knee), I.J. Ready (pre-existing back condition) and Craig Sword (back). Those within the basketball offices believe a harder court can lead to fatigue, which then can result in being more susceptible to injuries.

Stegeman Coliseum undergoing an internal facelift

QuoteUGA has added a massive picture banner around the scoreboard, along with the words "Georgia" and "Bulldogs" in capital letters.

That's already done, as part of a $1.8 previously-approved project. But the UGA athletic board on Friday approved more work on the 52-year-old arena, in a project with a price tab of $5.27 million.

The biggest feature: The long-awaited center-hung scoreboard, which has been talked about for years, but should now be in place for the 2017-18 season. So will a new sound system, a new lighting system and a new LED board.

"It certainly changes the dynamics in that facility," McGarity said.

In fact, every seat in the 10,523-seat arena will also be replaced, just putting in new ones and changing the color of some to fit with the new branding. McGarity said no consideration was given to increasing or decreasing the capacity size.

"That's not on the radar at this point in time," McGarity said.

QuoteFrank M. Moody Music Building Addition, which cost about $8 million, began construction in September 2015.

"It's pretty incredible," said Kenneth Ozzello, Director of Bands and Professor of Music at UA.

Ozzello said that while the band has made things work with what they've had in the past, but this new facility is simply a game-changer moving forward.

"We had nothing before. We had no band room," Ozzello said. "Unbelievably, there was no band room for the Million Dollar Band. We met out on [Butler] Field. If it rained or was muddy, we couldn't do anything. It's hard to have a band without a band room, but we did it for all those years."

He said that back when the band was smaller in the 1970s and 80s, they used rooms across campus they could fit into for practice. But the band as it currently stands, with its 400 members annually, hasn't had anywhere to call inside home.

"This is a tremendous advantage," Ozzello said. "The fact that we can have a sit-down rehearsal where it's not 100 degrees outside is certainly an advantage. It's enabled us to provide a much better learning environment for the band. It's an academic class. Now we actually have a classroom to have the class in."

QuoteVanderbilt University and the Board of Trust should initiate immediate action that will result near term in a new SEC quality stadium with a supporting funding campaign.

As Vanderbilt alumni and fans, we ask the Board of Trust, Vice Chancellor David Williams and Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos to fully support the construction of a SEC level football facility and to return the game day experience to a home field advantage.

Vanderbilt Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos recently declined comment through Beth Fortune, Vanderbilt's Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs regarding the construction of a new football stadium. Fortune told The Tennessean that it was premature to talk about a stadium right now with so many other steps yet to take, and she added: "We are first and foremost an academic institution, and that is always the priority."

Just weeks earlier, David Williams said that a new stadium should be built in the next three to four years depending on how quickly funds can be raised. The other 13 SEC schools have made substantial improvements to their football stadiums in the past 15 years. Those projects have cost more than $1.2 billion combined. The last major renovation to Vanderbilt Stadium was in 1981.

As Vanderbilt alumni and fans, we implore the Board of Trust, Vice Chancellor David Williams and Chancellor Nick Zeppos to fully support the construction of a SEC level football facility.

Please join Vanderbilt fans in petitioning the Board of Trust, Vice Chancellor Williams and Chancellor Zeppos to chart a clear and announced course that will result in an SEC quality stadium for our football program.

WBIR: UT Board of Trustees approve $106M Neyland Stadium improvements

QuoteUniversity of Tennessee system Board of Trustees met Friday afternoon, with chairman Gov. Bill Haslam in attendance.

Trustees approved recommended Neyland Stadium improvements.

Plans call for a $106 million renovation and expansion of Neyland Stadium, to be completed in time for the 2019 football season.

"This is the first time in many years we've sold all of our season tickets," UT chancellor Jimmy Cheek said.

It's no secret-- the Vols are a hot commodity, and Cheek said a stadium this popular is in need of improvements.

"It's also critical to us because in the SEC, it becomes more and more competitive every single year, and most of the SEC colleagues are doing some major renovations at their stadium to make the fan experience better," Cheek said.

The project focuses on the south end of the stadium and includes relocating the visitor locker room, addressing safety issues in the seating areas.

Plans include improvements to bathrooms, corridors and concessions areas.

But, Cheek said, "we don't have plans to expand seating at this point in time."

QuoteTennessee completed a feasibility study for future renovations to Neyland Stadium, and athletic department officials Tuesday both expanded on the objectives for the project's $106 million initial phase and stressed that it would not drastically alter the stadium's capacity.

Preserving a six-figure capacity apparently means sweating such smaller details as the amount of chair-back seats. Chris Fuller, a senior associate athletic director for development/external relations, described the process with the process as "a balancing act."

"I think what you're juggling is where can we improve seat amenities and how does that align with the overall capacity of the stadium," Fuller said. "And what we think we value, and what we think our fans value.

"I'd love to be in a situation where we could chair-back all the seats on both sidelines. However, we can't do it and maintain a capacity that I really think is important to the psyche of our fan base."

The initial phase, which is slated to begin between the 2018 and 2019 football seasons, will include renovating the south ground level and relocating the visitors' locker room. A back wall will be shifted to create more space as a safety measure, and the south concourse will be renovated from the ground up.

There also will be kitchen and commissary additions, hospitality area upgrades...

QuoteKentucky Athletics Department on Friday received approval to begin construction on a new baseball stadium. Construction will begin in February and is expected to take 18-20 months, meaning the stadium will open in late fall 2018 in time for the 2019 UK baseball season.

The new stadium will be located off Alumni Drive between the new Kentucky Football Training Facility and the Wendell and Vickie Bell Soccer Complex, adding to the cluster [CENSORED] of UK Athletics facilities in the area. The stadium will feature permanent seating for 2,400 fans with additional space on grass berms to accommodate a total of 4,000 fans for regular-season games. Beyond the outfield wall, temporary bleachers can be installed for NCAA Tournament games to bring the seating capacity to 6,000. Fan amenities also will include suites and a new club area.

QuoteMonday's press conference to announce the latest facility eventually circled back to men's basketball. Although John Calipari's team has a relatively new practice facility and players' dorm – in addition to upgrades to the locker room and audio/video technology at 40-year-old Rupp Arena – the university's flagship program is due for a fresh shine.

"Everything goes in cycles. We've always taken care of basketball here at a pretty high level," Barnhart said, noting that while UK basketball's Joe Craft Center only opened in January of 2007, "we need to update that. We've got to make sure we address that, and that's coming pretty quickly."

He didn't offer any specific basketball upgrades in the works, but he did note that when baseball moves out of its current home, Cliff Hagan Stadium, the long-neglected tennis program will begin construction on a new indoor/outdoor facility...

QuoteBarnhart said Kentucky is in the process of commissioning feasibility studies for a renovation of the Joe Craft Center, where the men's and women's basketball teams practice, and an addition to the Wildcat Coal Lodge where players live that would include a new dining area for all athletes on that side of campus.

Ideas for the Craft Center, a $32 million building that opened in January of 2007, include "some things we want to do in the locker room and the teaching space," Barnhart said. "We've got some plans and some thoughts: If we knock down a wall or two, could we enlarge the space? Could we make it look a little more (modern)? A decade later, what does that look like?"

There is no official timetable on beginning and ending construction for those projects, but the Wildcats' AD said it's "something we want to attack pretty quickly."

There is, of course, the question of funding.

Kentucky has completed a $126 million football stadium renovation and $45 million football training center in the last 15 months. It just announced plans for a $49 million baseball stadium  that should be completed by 2018.

"We're seeking some help. We've got to have money to do (basketball improvements)," Barnhart said. "We keep raising our hand. We've got to work our way through some of those finances. We just spent a lot of money on some facilities around here the last couple years, so we've got to make sure financially we're intelligent with what we do now. But we'll be fine."
