Dennis Johnson, others will get chance
on 2008-05-14
At 5-foot-8 or so, he is much shorter than the former No. 5. But, it's the lower body that is so distinctly different. Johnson's underpinnings are tree stumps; McFadden's are almost bird-like. In fact, Johnson looks much more like a prototype NFL back than McFadden, the first pick of the Oakland Raiders.

At this point, we're only talking about shapes and sizes, not projecting success in the Southeastern Conference, but Johnson and De'Anthony Curtis of Camden Fairview will get plenty of opportunities with the Razorbacks this fall.

Tight end Jordan Najvar, 6-6, 235, 4. 59 speed in the 40-yard dash, of Klein (Texas ) Oak said he wants to play in an offense much like the one Arkansas put on display in the April 26 Red-White game, when tight ends D. J. Williams and Andrew Davie caught 11 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.

But Sunday’s 4-2 victory pushed Arkansas (13-13 ) ahead of the Gamecocks (13-14 ) into No. 8 overall in the conference heading into the final three games.

Hogs-Gamecocks series ripe with postseason implications
on 2008-05-09
Other than East leader Georgia at the overall top and West cellar-dweller Mississippi State in the overall basement bottom, Arkansas and South Carolina scratch for survival like the rest of the SEC pack.

With only six SEC games, including the three against each other at Baum Stadium at 6: 30 tonight, 2 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday, the Razorbacks and visiting South Carolina Gamecocks are scrambling to finish ranked among the SEC's top eight in league play to advance to the 12-team league's eight-team SEC Tournament starting May 21 in Hoover, Ala.

Norton Undergoes Surgery; Fairchild’s Status
on 2008-05-08
when the Razorbacks’ post-spring depth chart was released Wednesday, the junior was noticeably missing.

Norton’s absence was largely because of a hamstring injury that sidelined him much of the spring. Hogs' new coach looking to fill voids on special teams in fall
on 2008-05-08
Arkansas' 15 spring football scrimmages and practices were meticulous. Plays were drilled over and over again on offense and defense. A new system requires repetition, said head coach Bobby Petrino.

As for special teams, most of that work was left on the back burner this spring. The reason for doing so was simple, Petrino said.

" You're going to have different guys in the fall covering the kickoff, " Arkansas'new head coach said. " I don't think there's a whole lot of carryover from running 70 yards down the field to cover in spring football when you don't know what schemes you're going to be going against [in the fall ]. "

Grades come in
on 2008-05-07
No University of Arkansas athletic teams will lose scholarships next year according to Academic Progress Rate (APR ) statistics released by the NCAA on Tuesday.

The APR is a formula the NCAA began using four years ago to rate how well schools retain and maintain eligibility for student-athletes.

Schools with teams not achieving the 925 benchmark are subject to penalties, including loss of scholarships and postseason bans.

Arkansas wasn't among the 123 schools listed by the NCAA with teams subject to penalties and is above the national average among its Division I peers for its men's basketball and football programs -=- READ MORE... (Link opens in a new window)

LIKE IT IS : Hogs coach gives group something to chew on
on 2008-05-07
They call themselves “The Olde Goats,” but they aren’t, not really.

When the call was made to see if Bobby Petrino would address their monthly birthday meeting, it had to be explained that the men in this group may be wellseasoned, but they are more like an extended family for the state of Arkansas than old goats. -=- READ MORE... (Link opens in a new window)

Atlanta: Coaching in NFL just not as much fun
on 2008-05-06
Bobby Petrino posted the third-worst coaching record for the Atlanta Falcons, which is actually quite a feat considering the history of that franchise. A 3-10 record suddenly seems a little less woeful when the name “Marion Campbell” is in the media guide.

Nick Saban went 15-17 in two seasons with the Dolphins, but at least his personnel moves enabled them to finish 1-15 after he left. A Miami columnist used words like “failure,” “loser,” “gasbag” and “weasel” to describe Saban after he quit to coach Alabama.
